Cypress Cabinets

Deep in the murky swamps of south Louisiana, cypress trees grew for thousands of years undisturbed. Slowly growing to heights of 80 to 150 feet, with trucks as much as 15 feet in diameter, they were relatively unnoticed until the mid to late 1800s, when the subtle grain, beautiful color and rot-resistance of the wood became apparent.

Cypress logging took off. Companies sent hordes of men, sweating in the humid marshes, to cut down the massive trees, bundle and float them miles and miles through mosquito-filled swamps and waterways to mills. The frenzy lasted until the 1920s, when most of the cypress had been taken. Meanwhile, this rare wood known for its resistance to rot and insect damage, versatility, and striking richness, was used in buildings and homes across the south.

Jordan Traditions is proud to give new life to this uniquely Louisiana wood that was a favorite of our ancestors. Recovered from deteriorating buildings and homes, the Jordans painstakingly have this rich wood re-milled into custom-designed and durable kitchen cabinets. Warm and inviting, they offer yet another link to the traditions of the past.
